The Steps to Restoration
There are a number of necessary steps in turning the source material into a restored movie. While unknown challenges may lead to a revision of the process, a tentative schedule follows:
To recreate the vaudeville act, a restored version of the movie containing only the animation can be produced.
- Identify the best available source materials, including nitrate prints of Gertie and/or their derivatives.
- Convert the film, frame by frame, to electronic digital media.
- Organize and catalogue the frames to ensure that no frames are lost from the final product.
- If multiple copies of a given frame exist, choose the best image.
- Remove dust and marks from each frame, using careful digital imaging techniques.
- Convert the digital media into standard film and video formats, and add a suitable musical score.
