The Steps to Restoration

There are a number of necessary steps in turning the source material into a restored movie.  While unknown challenges may lead to a revision of the process, a tentative schedule follows:

  1. Identify the best available source materials, including nitrate prints of Gertie and/or their derivatives.
  2. Convert the film, frame by frame, to electronic digital media.
  3. Organize and catalogue the frames to ensure that no frames are lost from the final product.
  4. If multiple copies of a given frame exist, choose the best image.
  5. Remove dust and marks from each frame, using careful digital imaging techniques.
  6. Convert the digital media into standard film and video formats, and add a suitable musical score.
  7. To recreate the vaudeville act, a restored version of the movie containing only the animation can be produced.
